My book of poems “The Morning I Was Born” has arrived. Inspired by my mother who has written a poem every morning for a decade I set out to do the same for the month of April. She would send me an assignment every morning and I would sit down over my first cup of tea to see what words arrived. It is no surprise that in many ways they mark my journey back to her.
The month had a certain magic to it. I wasn’t trying to be perfect, I was simply taking a photograph at that moment every day.
The energy of spring is in these pages. The long evenings wandering around the forest with my dog. The feeling of new life, of healing. These poems mark a fruition of some of the things I’ve been working on in my life for some years now. There is real joy in here, earned the hard way, right through the heart of the sorrow. While I wrote them I learned a little more about where I come from, and where I came back from, and what happens next. And you will know the heart of my upcoming record when you read them.
Winterbloom hits the East coast today! I’ll be reading from here as we bring our sacred and hilarious holiday musical celebrations from ME to D.C. We are especially excited this year to play in the beautiful Oberon theater at the A.R.T in Cambridge, MA on Friday. I hear there are still a few tickets for the 10pm.
Warmest wishes for the holidays and thank you – there are all sorts of births in our lives, thank you for being present to some of mine. -m
